St Breward Community Primary School

English Writing

Intent

At St Breward Primary School we are passionate about all our children becoming enthusiastic readers and creative writers. We have worked hard to adapt our writing curriculum over the last year, and are using Book Writes sequences tailored to our specific needs as a very small school.

At St Breward, we recognise the fundamental role of writing in a child's education and personal development. Our writing curriculum is designed to foster a love for writing, promote creative expression, and develop essential communication skills in all our children. Given our small school setting, we are uniquely positioned to provide personalised and focused instruction that meets the individual needs of each child.

Key objectives
 - Develop Core Writing Skills:Ensure that all students acquire the foundational skills of writing, including grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling.
- Encourage Creative Expression: Inspire students to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings creatively and confidently through various forms of writing.
- Enhance Critical Thinking: Use writing activities to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to articulate arguments and narratives coherently.
- Promote Literacy Across the Curriculum: Integrate writing skills across all subjects to reinforce the importance of clear and effective communication in every area of learning.
- Individualized Instruction: Leverage our small school environment to provide tailored feedback and support, ensuring each student's unique needs and potential are addressed.

Implementation

Children take part in daily English lessons from Reception to year 6. In Key Stage 1, this is carried out alongside daily phonics lessons to support reading fluency. We have high expectations for children at St Breward and strive for high quality writing across the whole curriculum.

Our writing curriculum was devised specifically for our small school and mixed age teaching following the Book Writes sequences. Coverage has been mapped out to ensure children cover all the National Curriculum objectives and more.

Book Writes is an innovative support package containing teaching sequences for planning in English. The teaching sequences follow a three-part plan: Learning about the text, practising writing and independent writing. Each sequence is based on quality children's literature and has reading activities and grammar taught in context included. These sequences are a core element in raising standards in writing.

Spelling

Children at St Breward are confident and able spellers. In Reception, children begin their spelling journey through our phonics scheme Little Wandle. The scheme is engaging and thorough and children usually progress on from this in Year 2 (see phonics page). Children will then move onto the Little Wandle Spelling Scheme, which supports the the continued building of their skills and prepares them for Key Stage 2.

In Key Stage 2, we follow Spelling Shed for our spelling curriculum. This uses phonetic understanding and clear instruction as a basis of each lesson. Parents can support their children to progress in spelling by accessing the online platform on the link below:
