St Breward Community Primary School

French

Intent

Our aim, at St Breward School, is to foster a love for languages and develop confident, competent, and curious learners who are eager to communicate in French. We believe a high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

The National Curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

 - speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

 - can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

 - discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation

At St Breward School, we believe that the learning of languages should start as early as possible and as consequently, we introduce songs and key phrases from EYFS onwards. The children gain a love for the French language before they start Key Stage 2.

In Key Stage 2, children have a French lesson each week, taught by their class teacher. We follow the Rachel Hawkes curriculum, which has been adapted and tailored to suit our small mixed age classroom. The children enjoy building their language skills through vocabulary practise, games, conversations and activities. The Rachel Hawkes programme enables children to confidently pronounce French words through its emphasis on phonic knowledge.

 Impact

Children at St Breward School leave in Year 6, with a love for French! They have a good basic understanding of the language, which has been taught with transition to secondary languages in mind.

Assessment is carried out by the teacher, using the Languages Assessment Framework for guidance.
