Science

Intent

At St Breward School, our intent for science education is to ignite curiosity and foster a deep understanding of the natural world through a hands-on, inquiry-based approach. By following the CUSP curriculum, we ensure that children develop a solid foundation in scientific knowledge and skills, which they can build upon as they progress through their education.

CUSP Science pays close attention to guidance provided by the National Curriculum sequence and content. It is infused with evidence-led practice and enriched with retrieval studies to ensure long-term retention of foundational knowledge. The foundations of CUSP science are cemented in the EYFS through learning within the Natural World, and People, Culture and Communities. Our ambitious interpretation of the National Curriculum places knowledge, vocabulary, working and thinking scientifically at the heart of our principles, structure and practice.

Implementation

Science is taught every week at St Breward School using a curriculum inspired by CUSP. The CUSP scheme has been adapted and tailored to suit the needs of our small 2 class school. Children take part in a 2-year rolling programme in Key Stage 1 which includes opportunities to revisit learning and build on understanding.

In Key Stage 2, children visit each area of learning twice, once in Lower Key Stage 2 and again in Upper Key Stage 2. Each time they focus on a different skill and build on their understanding. This ensures children leave St Breward with a strong understanding of science accompanied with the skills to undertake experiments, think and talk like a scientist and record their learning.

Impact

Children leave St Breward School with a clear and thorough understanding of the world around them. They will have studied physics, biology and chemistry units in detail and be able to discuss and recall their learning. Children are continuously asked to recall prior learning through questioning, quizzes and engaging tasks. At the end of units, children complete double page spreads to demonstrate all they have learnt.
